Caring For Bonsai Trees
Given proper and regular care, bonsai trees can live for decades, sometimes even hundreds of years. One of the oldest bonsai that still lives up to this day is located in the Tokyo Imperial Palace as a part of the country’s national treasures. It is a five-needle pine tree and is reported to be at least 500 years old and was cared for by generations of Japanese emperors and royalty.
Caring for bonsai trees is crucial to its development and long life. With proper handling, these small plants can be passed from one generation to another as a sort of prized heirloom. They are beautiful and continue to look charming and elegant as they age. They can also be used as a reminder of the many people who have cared for them over the years.
Soil and fertilization are important before planting bonsai trees. Before the planting process, make sure that you have loose soil that has organic components and easily retains moisture.
Regular attention must be given to these small plants. The limited and constrained space that they have in their containers requires them to be properly and correctly water. Make sure that you do not put too less or too much water in the plants. The amount of water also depends on the type of plant that was trained to be in miniature form.
The combination of heat, wind and sun exposure can dry these small plants so much that they may experience extreme weather conditions in their pots; extreme conditions that are comparable to drought. There are plant types that need to be constantly watered or have their soil soggy most of the time. Some plant species though, can handle long periods of dryness but still need to be watered regularly.
Deciduous plants are the type that needs to be watered almost constantly. They are more at risk of experiencing drought and dry soil can cause their roots to die and their leaves to dry out. Evergreen trees on the other hand, are more resilient to heat but they can be damaged with the grower only noticing it after the damage has been done.
Repotting is also one of the most commonly used techniques for Growing Bonsai Trees. The age and the vitality of the tree determine the need for pruning the root and repotting the plant. Some species are to be repotted around springtime, just when the plant is starting to leave its dormant period. Most plant species need to be repotted while growing to encourage the growth of new roots and to prevent them from being bounded by their containers.

For maintaining the bonsai, you need to have special tools that are made just for these types of plants. The most common tool used for this alternative planting activity is the concave cutter which is used to prune branches without leaving an unsightly and damaging stub. Other tools that are just as useful include branch bending jacks, different sizes and shapes of shears and wire pliers that allow easier detailing and shaping.
